Volunteer Shmolunteer
Wow...and I mean that in the worst possible way. Wow. Carson's Community day was just..ahhhh! Just terrible.
I got there right on time (9:45 am) but the other 2 teachers from my school were nowhere to be found. Fine. So I am sent by myself to go work in Juniors. Oooo, boy. (Gag.) I take the escalator down and walk over to the cash register in Juniors where a girl is just gabbing away on the phone, "Oh my God, I didn't get ANY sleep! No, none of the three hours I had to sleep were used sleeping. Can you believe it?" Yes...because you are talking like you are on speed.
Well, she continues to ignore me so I go over to another sales girl who has just showed up and tell her I'm one of the volunteers and was sent down here to help. She just looks at me like I had spoken in Portuguese or something so I have to repeat myself and she finally gets the idea. She tells me I can just keep things straight and put clothes back where they belong. In the excitiing world of retail, this is called Recovery. So I was to spend the next 3 hours...recovering clothes so to speak. And that's exactly what I did and it was the most boring 3 hours of my life. We're talking horrendous!
Minutes seemed like days as I went from one stack of jeans to the next and Ooops! That stack is about 1/2 an inch off center! Better go fix it! Not to mention the fact that I was pretty drugged up and totally spaced out due to my cold. It made for just a lovely morning.
I did make a new friend though. Kind of. Her name was Charlene. She works on the docks loading in stuff at the mall. Tough broad. Totally tough broad. A no nonsense, smokes 2 packs a day, is 45 but looks 55, gal. She struck up a conversation with me. (She was also sent to help in Juniors.) She said the big shots were supposed to be in Carson's today so we had to make things look really good. Then she asked why I was there and I told her about how I work at a preschool and she just looked dumbstruck. She fumbled with her words for a bit and then finally said, Wait, how old are you? I told her 28 and she said, Wooow. Really? I thought you were only 16 or 17. Then she laughed nervously showing off her nicely stained teeth. Oooh, Charlene!
I'm at home now. Still drugged up but very happy to be out of the Juniors Dept. Very happy.
